Malaysia launched a project on August 9 for a new mass market car to be produced locally with some technical support from Daihatsu Motor, officials said. The move comes as the country seeks to boost development and adoption of high technology in a renewed industrial push by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

According to Malaysia’s international trade and industry Minister Darell Leiking, the first model of the new national car will be launched by March 2021, with a prototype being presented a year earlier. It will be developed and built by Malaysian firm DreamEDGE with technical assistance from Daihatsu and will be funded by the private sector without involvement of public money.

Daihatsu, a subsidiary of Toyota Motor, owns a stake in Perodua, Malaysia’s second homegrown automaker after Proton and its best-selling brand.

The brand name of the new national car has not been announced yet. The project would offer affordable vehicles loaded with advanced technology, said DreamEDGE CEO Khairil Adri Adnan, adding that the first model is likely to be a C-segment sedan powered by either an advanced internal combustion engine or a hybrid system.

DreamEDGE, headquartered in Cyberjaya, describes itself as an innovative technology and engineering firm and is also active in creative design, modeling and media production. The company is majority-owned by government-controlled Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology through the latter’s VentureTECH fund.

According to Adnan, the company has over 150 engineers, who mainly specialise in the automotive industry. Some of its Malaysian engineers are based in Japan where DreamEDGE has a subsidiary in Tokyo. He said that the company has long collaborated with Japanese firms, which are providing technical and long-term strategic collaboration in technology innovation, from ideation to prototyping to mass production. Another subsidiary works on automotive technology in Ankara, Turkey.
