As a strategy to boost income and sales outreach for fishermen in West Java, Indonesia’s government is going digital: Coordinating maritime affairs minister Luhut Binsar Panndjaitan on July 20 inaugurated the country’s first-ever online fish auction site as a pilot project in the city of Palangpang – known for its busy fishing industry – on the island’s southern coast.

“The program is not only being conducted here, but will also be done for the whole of Indonesia. It will be developed everywhere,” Luhut said.

It is one of the Indonesian government’s efforts to reduce poverty within a number of occupational groups, as well as to tap the potential profits from the country’s fishing industry which are estimated to amount to a total of $2.5 trillion, Luhut added.

He said that with an online auction, fishermen would not have to use money to conduct transactions and could directly inform the potential buyers about their hauls while still at sea.

“While the fishermen are still at sea, the market will already know what is in the catch and transactions can be done immediately. To support this, we partnered with signal transmitter startup Net1, which can transmit up to a distance of 60 kilometers, using Wi-Fi,” said Luhut.

Luhut also said the online platform will help to cut out middlemen from the sales process, which, in turn, would further increase proceeds for fishermen.
