SMM 2018: Green Shipping Makes Headway
Mar 20, 2018

Bringing effective ballast water management and a lower sulphur limit for ship fuels, new, stricter environmental regulations are forcing the shipping industry to take action. At SMM 2018, exhibitors will present future-proof technologies. At the concurrent environmental conference Global Maritime Environmental Congress (gmec), experts will discuss challenges and opportunities facing the industry. A new theme route will guide fair visitors to cruise-related exhibition highlights.

Hamburg, 20/03/2018 --( ASIA TODAY )-- The countdown is on: The new 0.5 per cent sulphur limit for ship fuels will take effect on 1 January 2020. “There is no turning back. The lower sulphur limit will have a significant positive impact on the environment and on human health, especially for people living in port cities and coastal regions,” said IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim on occasion of the meeting of the IMO’s Sub-committee on Pollution Prevention and Response in early February. LNG is one possible way to comply with this regulation: According to the SMM Maritime Industry Report (MIR), as many as 44 per cent of shipowners are considering liquefied natural gas propulsion for their newbuilds. At SMM 2018, the leading international maritime trade fair in Hamburg, industry stakeholders will be able to discuss other compliance options, as well.

LNG a clean alternative

Around the world shipowners are facing the challenge of having to make far-reaching decisions: Will low-sulphur fuel be available in sufficient quantities at reasonable prices? Are exhaust gas scrubbers a smart investment? Or would it be better to opt for LNG right away? Questions like these will be discussed at the Global Maritime Environmental Congress (gmec) which is held on 5 September as part of the SMM conference programme. Speakers such as Katharine Palmer, Global Sustainability Manager at the classification society Lloyd’s Register, will advise the industry on how to best comply with current regulations and prepare for future ones. In exhibition hall A5, which will be dedicated to the Green Propulsion theme with a special focus on LNG, decision-makers will be able to meet up with experts to get advice and study technical solutions hands-on.

As for ballast water management (BWM), the IMO is granting shipowners a transitional period before they must comply fully. Meanwhile the industry is working full speed on implementing the BWM Convention which took effect in 2017. This necessitates investments in the order of billions. In a study of the global ballast water management market between now and the year 2026, the US market research firm Stratistics MRC forecasts a growth rate of nearly 40 per cent – per year.

Understanding which types of BWM system are suitable for a specific ship type, and which of these systems meet both the IMO rules and the stricter requirements of the US Coast Guard is challenging. A gmec expert panel including Debra DiCianna of the US consulting firm Choice Ballast Systems, Tim Wilkins, Environment Director at Intertanko, the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners, Stamatis Fradelos, Principal Engineer, Operational Environmental Performance (OEP) Team, ABS and others will provide valuable insights. SMM visitors will be able to familiarise themselves first-hand with the technologies offered by relevant manufacturers from around the world. “Numerous manufacturers are reporting record numbers of incoming orders,” says Claus Ulrich Selbach, Business Unit Director – Maritime and Technology Fairs & Exhibitions at Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH.

This year’s fair will again feature various theme-based routes to help visitors find the exhibition highlights they are looking for. “We have added a Cruise & Ferry Route to our programme,” says Selbach. “From the engine room to the bridge through to passenger cabins, this route spreads out the entire value chain before our visitors.”

Cruise industry: Pioneering sustainability

When it comes to eco-friendly ship operation, the cruise industry is one step ahead of most other shipping segments, not only in response to increased environmental awareness among passengers but also because the many highly sensitive waters visited by these ships must be protected. It is the segment’s explicit goal to minimise the effects of every trip on the marine environment and on coastal regions. Here again, LNG ship fuel plays a key role. For example, AIDA Cruises ordered their third LNG-ready cruise vessel from Meyer Werft just a few weeks ago. The Japanese NGO Peace Boat’s Ecoship concept likewise favours LNG power. Apart from its dual-fuel engine, the vessel will feature ten retractable, rigid sails doubling as photovoltaic panels as well as wind turbines, and an additional 6,000 square metres of on-deck solar panels. Further information on what may will be the ‘greenest’ cruise ship yet will be available in Hall A5.

Under the chairmanship of Andreas Chrysostomou, acting Secretary General of the European chapter of CLIA, the Cruise Lines International Association, a gmec expert panel will focus on the cruise industry’s pioneering role in environment protection. The panel will include Bud Darr, Executive Vice President, Maritime Policy and Government Affairs at MSC Cruises; Lex Nijsen, Vice President and Head of Four-Stroke Marine, MAN Diesel & Turbo; Rolf Sandvik, CEO, The Fjords and Jan-Erik Rasanen, Head of New Technologies at the Finnish engineering firm Foreship, among other experts.

This year’s gmec conference will take place on 5 September. The conference team will again be supported by its cooperation partner Seatrade. “Once again we have been able to recruit some top-level experts from all around the world for SMM,” says Mary Bond, Managing Director Publishing and Content at Seatrade. “Attendees can expect a series of fascinating discussions and an array of innovative solutions that will make shipping
cleaner step by step.”

Shenzhen International Furniture Exhibition Opens Today, Providing A Global Platform for Creative Innovation
Mar 19, 2018

SHENZHEN, China, March 19, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2018 Shenzhen International Furniture Exhibition (the "Exhibition"), China's industry-defining industrial furniture and home design convention, officially opens today. Running from March 19-22, it is a key industry platform for international exchange between China and top global players from Europe, USA and Asia.

Inaugurated in 1996, this is the event's 33rd rendition, with a focus on facilitating international exchange in creativity and innovation to push the boundaries of design.

"China has long established itself as a major player in the global manufacturing industry," says Hong Xiaohui, secretary general of Shenzhen Furniture Association. "In 2018 we aim to use the Exhibition as a platform from which we can promote the upgrading of China's design sensibilities and shift the industry's focus from 'Made in China' to 'Created in China.'"

The Exhibition is being held across 9 themed halls spanning 160,000m2, with creativity as a key focus. Highlights include "The Lake," an art installation integrating traditional and contemporary design elements to explore public and ecological welfare; and "Design Pati," an exhibition celebrating China's leading boutique design brands that are pushing boundaries in creative industrial design.

The exhibition also aims to highlight Shenzhen as a growing international hub for design. The "Talents in Shenzhen" exhibition, is showcasing works from an international community of Shenzhen-based graphic designers, craftsmen, lighting designers and artists, using furniture design as a canvas.

"In recent years, Shenzhen has attracted and fostered a lot of top international talent in industrial design, innovation, management and services," says Hong. "This has helped to put the Shenzhen International Furniture Exhibition on a fast track to becoming a truly internationalized event."

Pushing the boundaries of design through innovation is another major focus of the 2018 Exhibition. Following the popularity of exhibitions around urban living in 2016 and 2017, a new exhibition, the "International Show of Prefabricated Furnished Houses," will explore ideas around smart and prefabricated living. Top global players including Ikea, Xiaomi, Sekisui House and Braun will present cutting-edge solutions in space economization and smart home technology through dynamic and enjoyable modern living concepts.

Asiamold concludes with an array of potential business opportunities for the 3D printing and mould industries
Mar 16, 2018

GUANGZHOU --( ASIA TODAY )-- Asiamold ‒ Guangzhou International Mould & Die Exhibition successfully brought to a close its 12th edition of the fair. Held concurrently with SPS – Industrial Automation Fair Guangzhou from 4 ‒ 6 March at the China Import and Export Fair Complex in Guangzhou, the two fairs hosted 896 exhibitors and welcomed 72,068 professional buyers during the three-day shows. Enjoying year-on-year growth, the fairs continue to strengthen their position as a critical trade platform for both the industrial automation and the mould, die casting and additive manufacturing markets in China.

Before commencing her presentation on the 3D printing process, Ms Kim Francois, Managing Director, Materialise China, asked the audience whether they understood or had ever used 3D printing before. When just a few hands were raised from a packed seminar audience, it was clear that despite the undeniable industry buzz and growing awareness of 3D printing, knowledge about its application is still limited. Recognising this demand for a high-level gathering of key industry professionals in the 3D printing sector, Asiamold established the Guangzhou International 3D Printing Technology Application Summit which invited 13 speakers to deliver a range of insights into the industry over the two-day summit. Talks varied from the approach and impact of 3D printing in the China and European markets respectively, to how the mould and 3D printing industries can work together collaboratively.

Feedback from both exhibitors and attendees underlined why a concurrent event programme of talks and seminars is so useful alongside the exhibits. Seminar speaker, Ms Francois, explained: “It’s a no brainer for us as a company to take the opportunity of presenting at the summit and meet people from our target industry. It was a great chance to explain more precisely just what it is that we do and how we can provide important business opportunities for companies not yet incorporating 3D printing technology.”

The overwhelming feedback from both exhibitors and buyers at the show was that new 3D printing technologies do not have to replace traditional manufacturing techniques, but that they can be used by companies to simplify production lines, lower manufacturing costs and speed up production, ultimately increasing revenue and profitability. Many 3D printing exhibitors spoke of new business contacts made at the fair with companies who are in the beginning stages of employing 3D printing technology into their own production lines.

Key figures for AOG18 (combined with SIAF18):

* 896 exhibitors from 20 countries and regions (+12.7%)
* 72,068 visitors from 40 countries and regions (+12.5%)
* 60,000 sqm across 5 halls
* 231 buyer delegate groups (+6%)
* 80 presentations delivered during the concurrent event programmes

High quality seminars invite leading industry professionals to shed light on exciting new technologies and solutions

The concurrent event programme was organised to provide a comprehensive business platform for visitors, featuring the debut Automobile Lightweight Product and Technology Summit as well as the Guangzhou International 3D Printing Technology Application Summit.

The new Automobile Lightweight Product and Technology Summit hosted six noted speakers during the conference, delivering in-depth talks about the ways in which the auto industry can make lightweight automobiles by using lightweight materials, laser welding and die-casting. Integrating lightweight materials can thus create a more efficient and cost-effective production process. As the automotive industry is a key sector of visitors to the show, the summit was an ideal learning and research occasion for industry professionals to tap into cross-sector business opportunities.

With such a promising array of mould making, die casting, laser welding and 3D printing technologies on display at the show, it will be fascinating to see the progress of the industry in the South China region by the time Asiamold descends on Guangzhou next year.

Participants share their feedback of Asiamold:

Exhibitor: Ms Wu Shuqin, Director, Industrial Accessories Department, Dongguan Eontec Co Ltd (China)

“Our business operates in various sectors including the communication, LED, medical and automobile manufacturing industries. This is our second year at the fair and we prioritised the promotion of our automobile molding services and liquidmetal products. We chose to participate at Asiamold because the show is a part of the Messe Frankfurt family, which is well known to our target buyers in the car industry. We believe the fair is good way to promote our brand and products and the number of visitors at our booth has exceeded our expectations. A number of clients we have met with have been from overseas corporations which is very pleasing.”

Exhibitor: Mr Hyun-Joon Jang, Manager, Marketing Team, Korea Association for Die & Mold Industry Development (Korea) “We participate at the show to connect with mould and die companies from surrounding cities like Duangguan, Guangzhou and Zhongshan.
We come to the fair to both buy and sell. On the one hand we want to find outsourcing partners for raw materials, on the other hand we want to look for new customers. Asiamold is a really important platform to network and liaise with Chinese partners. We have witnessed new technologies and innovations by domestic Chinese suppliers and I am quite surprised by the speed of developments in China. The 3D printing and molding companies are collaborating rather than competing against each other.”

Visitor: Mr Aleksander Ciszek, CEO, 3YOURMIND, (United States)

“I represent a software company that creates innovative platforms for industrial 3D production. We are thinking about extending our business into the Asian market. Primarily I am looking for customers and partnerships at the fair. I think that to break into the Asian market it is necessary to work closely with local partners and to understand their culture better. There are many different sectors and types of companies present which is a good thing as it allows for some cross-sector collaboration opportunities.”

Seminar Speaker: Mr Xu Guojian, Deputy General Manager, Raycham Laser Technology Group Co Ltd (China)

“My presentation was concerned with the application of laser welding technologies in the automotive industry. Organising seminars concurrently with the fair allows the needs of fairgoers coming from diversified sectors to be met, and at the same time provide direction for future development. I was able to meet with many of the attendees to discuss potentially working together. I think that this type of seminar arrangement is an indispensable part of the fair.”

Seminar Speaker: Ms Kim Francois, Managing Director, Materialise China (China)

“When looking at materials we are always searching for applications and we believe that mould making is one of the industries with high potential to incoporate 3D printing. Right now there are not many case studies for potential new customers to see and understand, and so that’s why delivering talks like this can be very beneficial for our company. The mould and die business matches perfectly with the additive manufacturing. Although there is a lot of talk and buzz about 3D printing right now, the number of people who understand and know how to incorporate this technology is relatively low. It is my goal here to open the minds of those attending and then possibly collaborate with them at a later stage.”

Seminar Attendee: Mr Yulin Huang, Account Manager in Guangzhou Area, Hunan Farsoon High-Tech Co Ltd, Shenzhen Farsoon 3D Printing Co Ltd (China)

“By attending the ‘Guangzhou International 3D Printing Technology Application Summit’, I was able to find out more about the latest technologies on the market and also to meet with industry professionals for networking. The presentations provided us insights into the newest trends by showcasing advanced solutions developed by leading brands. The seminars have provided me with useful knowledge to help with my daily work.”

Vibrant discussion, innovative concepts and eye-catching exhibits qualified SIAF 2018 as another rewarding edition of the show with expectations for next year already growing.

Show earns cross-industry support with positive feedback from fairgoers

Exhibitor: Mr Xie Zhihui, Account Manager Beckhoff Automation (Shanghai) Co Ltd “We believe that SIAF is the most professional automation fair in South China of its kind. That is why we choose to attend the show year after year. We look to achieve two goals: the first one is to consolidate our position as the leading industry player in the field by not missing any important exhibitions. Secondly, we want to get in touch with different clients, which is important to boost our sales. A Sunday opening enabled engineers from more distant areas to visit the show. On the second day, many engineers from the buyer delegations came to our booth. We will definitely come back again next year.”

Exhibitor: Ms Maggie Liu, Marketing Supervisor Cognex Vision Inspection System (Shanghai) Co Ltd “SIAF is the first automation show in 2018 in South China. It is a highly effective platform to showcase our latest products. This year, visitors were interested in our brand new ES-A5000 Series Area Scan 3D Camera, spending a long time observing the display. A significant proportion of visitors came from the automotive industry, while we even received enquiries from the agricultural sector. Receiving over 400 leads on the first day was an unexpected result for a Sunday opening.”

Exhibitor: Mr Wang Liang, Marketing Manager Adtech (Shenzhen) Technology Co Ltd “SIAF has significant influence within the industry in the South China region. We keep returning to the fair in order to increase our brand awareness. This year, our exhibits on display were robotics, fieldbus systems and linear motors. For fieldbus systems, we showcased the total solutions of Ethercat and RTEX. Existing clients visited our booth and I am satisfied with the flow and quality of visitors. SIAF enables us to present the foundation of our technologies to our clients. In return, we gained market insights for future product development. The fair plays a dynamic role in driving technological progress by gathering suppliers and buyers in one place to facilitate the exchange of market intelligence.”

Exhibitor: Mr Barney Wang, Marketing Specialist KEBA Industrial Automation (Shanghai) Co Ltd “This is our first time exhibiting in South China. SIAF is the fair that most people recommended. Our objectives are not necessarily to look for solid orders, but to extend our market reach in the region. Our company specialises in control systems of robotics and we develop diversified options of on-the-go software packages. The visitor flow of the first day was impressive for a Sunday opening. Visitors were fascinated by the speed and the stability of our systems and they were really keen to take photos of the robots.”

Seminar Speaker: Mr Tomoya Abe, Assistant Manager, Engineering Department The Japan Electrical Manufacturers’ Association “This is our first time visiting SIAF. We were indeed overwhelmed by the number of visitors onsite. The seminar hall was packed and some attendees were happy to stand up the whole time. Quite a number of the audience came to exchange business cards with us after the session. Japan has advantages in core components, while China enjoys a greater economy of scale. I believe such a networking channel can encourage knowledge sharing and promote cooperation between the Japanese and Chinese automation industries in the long run. I hope that Chinese and Japanese companies can learn from each other and if there is an opportunity, we will definitely visit SIAF again.”

Seminar Speaker: Dr. Pinsheng Du, Chief Technology Officer Nanjing Phoenix Contact Co Ltd “This seminar is invaluable to the industry as it brings key decision makers in the field of automation in China together to discuss the difficulties encountered by the entire industry, as well as the possible solutions. Our guest speakers from Phoenix Contact, B&R Automation and Beckhoff, are actually direct competitors. Yet their CEOs are willing to put the competition aside and embrace information sharing during this occasion. Such a dialogue is unique in China. I hope we can inspire attendees and get them ready for the transformation in the IoT era.”

Seminar Speaker: Dr Weirong Xiao, Director of Great China B&R Industrial Automation (China) Co Ltd “The ‘Dialogue with Hidden Champion’ series is a well-received seminar, which provides a great occasion for leading brands to interact with their target market. The presentation is more than a product introduction as we believe our discussion can faciliate the exchange of technical know-how and offer insights into future developments. The audience enthusiastically participated in the seminar and the attendance was really pleasing. I don’t think this result would be seen at other fairs.”

Premium Buyer: Mr Nicholas Li, Training Supervisor Flextronics Manufacturing (Zhuhai) Co Ltd “We have been visiting the fair since the first edition. This year, more than 10 employees from our automation department visited the fair. We specialise in electronic manufacturing services and iterative prototyping which can be applied in different industries. One of the iterative prototyping examples in the current market we are involved in is Fitbit fitness trackers. We would like to explore the latest industry trends and automation equipments. The fair connects our employees with representatives from different companies and encountering new ideas will further inspire our frontline staff to develop better technologies.”

Premium Buyer: Mr Tang Deshi, Electrical Officer, Engineering Department Guangdong Jiaduobao Drink & Food Co Ltd “Our brand specialises in the production of herbal tea and mineral water. We came here to look for sensors and accessories for our production lines. Two to three suppliers have drawn our attention and Triumph Cable is one of them. We are interested in their cables which can connect with robots. The supplier is also located at Dongguan, which is close to our factory. It is very likely we will purchase their products for trial. Visiting the fair allows you to experience how various technologies can be applied which you would not be able to do online.”
