Electronics Fair & electronicAsia Attract Nearly 87,000 Buyers
Oct 17, 2018

16 October 2018 - The 38th HKTDC Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Autumn Edition) and the 22nd electronicAsia concluded today, attracting close to 87,000 buyers from 139 countries and regions over a four-day period. Buyer attendance grew from a number of countries and regions including mature markets such as Canada, Italy, Singapore, Taiwan and the UK, and emerging markets such as Brazil, the Chinese mainland, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Russia. More than 63,500 buyers visited the Autumn Electronics Fair while over 23,400 visitors attended electronicAsia. The Electronics Fair was organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), while electronicAsia was jointly organised by the HKTDC and MMI Asia.

HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Benjamin Chau said: “In the face of global economic uncertainty, Hong Kong companies are pushing to strengthen R&D and develop new technologies in a bid to launch innovative electronic products. At the two fairs, we saw how they are successfully applying advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) to a wide range of electronic products, attracting the attention of global buyers. Thematic zones at the fairs, such as the Tech Hall and Hall of Fame, helped to meet the needs of the industry while a series of events at the Autumn Electronics Fair helped to introduce the products and technologies of start-up companies to potential buyers, partners, investors and the media, assisting them to capture new business opportunities.”

The HKTDC commissioned an independent survey during the fair period, interviewing a total of 1,043 exhibitors and buyers on the outlook for the electronics market and new product trends. Some 60% of respondents said the recent Sino-US trade friction has had a negative effect on their export performance. Around 40% of respondents said they expect their company’s overall sales to grow this year – 13 percentage points lower than the proportion that gave the same response in 2017. In terms of markets with growth prospects, survey respondents view Japan as the most promising traditional market (75%), followed by South Korea (73%) and Western Europe (72%), while the Chinese mainland (77%), Middle East (76%) and ASEAN countries (76%) are seen to have the best prospects among emerging markets.

In terms of product trends, the survey reveals that audio-visual products (17%) have the most growth potential in 2019, followed by electronic/electrical accessories (14%) and digital imaging (9%). For AR and virtual reality (VR) devices, almost 80% of respondents are optimistic about the market development in the next two years, while most respondents think that mobile and online games (57%) and audio-visual entertainment devices (45%) have the largest market potential. For robotics applications, 67% of respondents say they are optimistic about market developments in the next two years, with entertainment purposes such as toy robots (40%) having the largest market potential, followed by home applications such as vacuum cleaners (36%) and medical applications such as rehabilitation treatments (24%).

Spotlighting AI and Other Innovations
The Tech Hall at the Electronics Fair featured five thematic zones, including Robotics & Unmanned Tech, Smart Tech, Virtual Reality, 3D Printing and Startup zones. First-time exhibitor Tuya Global showcased its AI solutions for smart home appliances and lighting products, hoping to expand its overseas markets. Morgan Fang, Business Development Manager of Tuya Global, said: “Many buyers want to upgrade their traditional products into smart products. We established connections with new buyers from Europe, North America and Southeast Asia during the fair and are now discussing cooperation plans.”

Taiwanese start-up exhibitor Serafim Technologies showcased a virtual laser projection keyboard that attracted a lot of attention from buyers. GZ Chen, CEO of the company, said they have met with new buyers from Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, Southeast Asia, Germany, Italy and Russia, and have secured orders for a total of 5,000 sets. He said the business results from the fair were very encouraging.

Under the theme “AI Empowerment – Grow without Limits”, the Symposium on Innovation & Technology featured representatives from the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), Cisco, Deloitte, IBM, Microsoft, Pfizer and SenseTime. They discussed how AI can empower organisations and affect the employment picture, as well as some of the challenges associated with AI implementation. The symposium attracted more than 1,260 participants.

Buyers Place On-the-spot Orders
Australian buyer Jaka Exstrada took part in the Autumn Electronics Fair for the first time. He identified six potential suppliers of advanced driver-assistance systems and breathalysers through the HKTDC business matching service, and plans to buy a container of products from each supplier after the fair. He has also placed an order with an existing supplier from the Chinese mainland for air quality products worth US$200,000.

At electronicAsia, Malaysian buyer CH Ooi placed an order worth up to US$60,000 for liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) and measurement instruments. He said that talks were also underway with several new suppliers from the Chinese mainland for GPS-related tracking devices, including sensors and cameras, and the potential orders could be valued up to US$200,000.

Nordbygg 2018 was a success – now we look ahead to 2020!
Oct 10, 2018

With 48,000 visitors, 930 high-quality exhibitors and 250 well-visited seminars, Nordbygg 2018 was a success with both the public and the exhibitors. The arrangers are now looking forward to 2020 with confidence, in particular because more than 50 percent of the exhibitor space has already been booked.

This year’s Nordbygg was the best ever! This was the message from the visitor survey, in which visitors rated this year’s fair 4.4 out of a possible 5 – the highest rating ever. The ambition to develop Nordbygg has proven to be a success. This is confirmed by one-third of the visitors, who consider the fair to have improved in recent years.

“It naturally feels really great that our efforts have been appreciated. And there were more visitors this year than in 2016. We are particularly pleased that we are the industry leader when it comes to the number of female visitors. The fact that half of the exhibition space for 2020 is already booked, as well is proof that even the exhibitors are satisfied,” says Peter Söderberg, Event Manager for Nordbygg.

Size and breadth set the fair apart

Peter Söderberg believes that there are several reasons behind the strong results.
One is that the fair is well structured and thus manageable, its' size, the breadth among the exhibitors, the number of interesting events and the large number of new products and services are also important. The exhibitors appreciated the international interest, which was record-strong this year, as was the number of visitors with a decision-making mandate.

A relevant seminar program filled the chairs quickly. One of the most popular discussed the fire at Grenfell Tower in London and also had a strong effect on the audience.

“The important message was that we must be better at working together to promote fire safety and knowledge about materials from a fire safety perspective, and we must have a better control system in Sweden,” summarizes Anneli Kouthoofd, CEO of Byggmaterialindustrierna, an umbrella organization for the building materials industry, and moderator at the lecture.

New technology here to stay

The fact that this year’s Nordbygg was also filled with digital perspectives, both in the seminar program and on the exhibition floor, was also appreciated. This was manifested by Nordic Contech’s decision to launch its meeting place for digital innovations in the construction industry at the fair.

“New technology is now establishing itself in the building sector. This will be even more evident at Nordbygg 2020,” says Peter Söderberg.

Energy-saving Products and Green Tech at Eco Expo Asia
Oct 09, 2018

9 October 2018 – Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, and co-organised by the Environment Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government, the 13th edition of Eco Expo Asia will run from 25 to 28 Oct at AsiaWorld-Expo, featuring some 330 exhibitors from 19 countries and regions.

Groups from the Chinese mainland’s Hunan, Zhaoqing and Inner Mongolia will participate for the first time, joining 13 international pavilions to showcase the latest green technologies. In line with the government’s efforts to push the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, various cities will gather in the Greater Bay Area Zone to present local green opportunities. The Environment Bureau will cooperate with different government departments to form an HKSAR Government booth, the largest zone at the expo, to promote environmental policies and a range of green projects.

“We are currently facing a range of environmental challenges across the globe,” said HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Benjamin Chau. “The business sector and governments across Asia have been actively promoting waste reduction and energy saving. As Asia’s leading innovative technology hub, Hong Kong can provide the latest solutions for carbon reduction and drive the region’s development of the environmental industry through events such as Eco Expo Asia, bringing together a wide array of innovative green products and technologies.”

Mr Chau noted that there are plenty of business opportunities in the green market. According to the government’s Census and Statistics Department, the value added by Hong Kong’s environmental industry in 2016 was HK$8.4 billion, growing 6.7% year on year. Statistics also showed that investment in the environmental sector on the Chinese mainland, including environmental pollution control, waste management and energy-saving, is projected to exceed Rmb$15 trillion during the 13th Five-Year Plan period.

Commenting on the importance of Eco Expo Asia, Alice Cheung, Deputy Director of the Environmental Protection Department, said she hopes the event will enhance cooperation and exchange between the government and industry players, promote the enormous opportunities in Asia, encourage the business sector and government departments to conduct green sourcing, and help to raise public awareness on environmental issues.

Nine Thematic Zones: Startup Zone Showcases Innovative Green Technology

To promote waste-reduction awareness among businesses and the public, Eco Expo Asia has adopted a new theme this year – “Waste Less Save More for a Low-carbon Future”. The expo will feature nine thematic zones, including Green Buildings and Energy Efficiency, Green Transportation, Waste Management and Recycling and the Startup zone, presenting a comprehensive range of green products and technologies.

An increasing number of start-up companies are being attracted to invest in research and development in green products and technologies. The expo’s Startup Zone will feature products from 20 fledgling companies, offering them a prime opportunity to connect with potential investors and business partners. Some of the start-up products and technologies were showcased at today’s Eco Expo Asia press conference, with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) highlighting its patented innovative soundproofing metamaterials that outperforms traditional soundproofing material such as sponge and rock wool. This pioneering technology is highly effective in blocking sound in adverse conditions and can be applied to power generation and energy systems, transportation and household appliances.

Green Transportation Zone: Ready and Charged for a Test Drive/Ride

One of the hottest environmental trends is the development of green transportation that will help to reduce exhaust emissions and carbon footprint. Several eco-vehicles and charging devices will be on display at the expo, including the Nissan e-NV200 electric car that is equipped with a 40kWh high-capacity lithium battery offering 80% chargeability in 40 minutes. Hyundai’s second-generation commercial hydrogen fuel cell electric car, Nexo, will also be presented at the expo. The model is the first hydrogen fuel cell electric SUV to be showcased in Hong Kong, with a drive distance of over 600 kilometres and a five-minute fuel fill time.

Visitors can enjoy a test drive or test ride of the electric vehicles at the expo. For registration, please visit the expo’s website (https://bit.ly/2RsVGJK) or queue on-site.

Eco Asia Conference: To Unveil Green Policies and Business Opportunities

The Eco Asia Conference will run concurrently with the expo, bringing together government officials and business leaders from various countries and regions to share their insights on a range of issues. Experts from Australia, Canada and Hong Kong will discuss smart water management solutions and the latest wireless sensor network for metropolitan smart drainage systems. Officials from the National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Industry & Information Technology and Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People’s Republic of China, together with other mainland officials, will share the country’s latest green policies and initiatives to prevent water pollution in the pan-Pearl River Delta region. In addition, the Hong Kong Construction Association and the Hong Kong Institute of Acoustics will organise the “Smart Construction for Quiet” Symposium, where experts from the United Kingdom, Australia and Singapore will discuss the latest developments in construction noise-control policies and innovative methods for quieter construction.

Green Mart and Workshops on Public Day to Promote Green Living

Eco Expo Asia will open its doors to the public on the last day of the event (28 Oct) to promote green living. Free shuttle bus services will be offered between the venue and other locations in the city throughout the fair period. Visitors can shop for innovative environmentally friendly products and health products at the Green Mart, and join sustainable workshops to make frosted glass jar lamps. The Start Small, Start Now documentary, which highlights Hong Kong’s plastic-waste problem, will also premiere on Public Day. At the Public Day Forum, a representative from the Hong Kong Observatory will assess the impact of global warming on Hong Kong while a Water Supplies Department representative will share tips on smart water usage.

The concurrent Hong Kong International Outdoor and Tech Light Expo (26-29 Oct) at the AsiaWorld-Expo will showcase outdoor lighting, industrial lighting, advertising lighting, lighting accessories, parts and components for construction design. In addition, the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition) will be held from 27-30 Oct at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), creating synergy and more business opportunities for exhibitors.

New date, same strong results: Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics remains the industry’s leading business platform
    Oct 05, 2018

Taking place in September for the first time, the earlier date of the 2018 Autumn Edition of Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics was well received by both exhibitors and buyers. Strong business results and visitor flow, following on from recent editions, once again proved the fair’s leading position in the industry as an effective sourcing platform. In total, around 78,000 trade buyers1 from some 110 countries and regions visited the fair, (2017: 77,883, 102 countries and regions), sourcing from 4,480 exhibitors from 33 countries and regions (2017: 4,538, 32 countries and regions).

Ms Wendy Wen, Senior General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, commented at the conclusion of the fair: “The diversity and internationality of Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics once again came to the fore, as exhibitors and buyers were widely satisfied in meeting their participation objectives. This was aided by the earlier date which more closely aligned the fair with the industry’s earlier autumn / winter sourcing season, and was appreciated by both exhibitors and buyers. There were many exhibitor success stories this edition throughout all the fair’s product categories, while those focusing either on meeting their existing customers or new buyers were able to find their targets. Those focused on China reported the continued strength of this market, while exhibitors targeting international markets were pleased with the buyer diversity and international brands in attendance. For buyers, the unrivalled range of quality products covering the entire apparel fabrics and accessories industry stood out the most for many of them.”

On the international exhibitors side this edition, strong growth was registered in the Functional Lab with the number of exhibitors increasing by 92%, while participation in Premium Wool Zone grew by 30%. In Accessories Vision, the number of overseas exhibitors increased by 25%. Meanwhile, nearly all of the fair’s Group Pavilions, from the likes of Hyosung, INVISTA, DuPont and OEKO-TEX, were larger this edition, while new pavilions from Birla, ECOCERT + GOTS, the Indian Chamber of Commerce and the Korea Outdoor & Sports Industry Association expanded the sourcing options for buyers.

The international halls experienced high visitor footfall

While there was much business interaction occurring in these areas, many buyers also found the time to gain inspiration for the next season in the fair’s many trend areas for A/W 19-20, including the Intertextile Directions Trend Forum, four Chinese trend forums, as well as trend areas in the Japan, Taiwan and Korea Pavilions. Adding more inspiration to the fringe programme this edition was the new video display ‘FutureCast: The State of the Consumer’. Developed by The Doneger Group, this presentation helped the apparel industry to gain a wider perspective of the consumer market by delving into the main sociocultural and innovation developments taking place today and their repercussions on business, design, creative and marketing opportunities.

    Exhibitor feedback

“This is our first time exhibiting here, and both we and our knitting partners have met a lot of potential customers. We target both brands and end-users, and the fair does attract quality Chinese fashion brands as well as garment knitters and weavers. Our products are quite expensive, so we target the high-end market, and many visitors are from this sector. Victoria’s Secret saw our product in the Trend Forum and came to our booth. We’ve also had buyers from Icebreaker and other luxury brands visit us. Chinese buyers are looking for innovation from overseas brands, so we do attract more attention being an international company.”

Mr James Tang, Marketing Manager, Südwolle Group, China (German brand)

    Japan Pavilion

“The China market pays more attention to the quality and functionality of products nowadays, which provides great potential for us. Dickies used our SOLOTEX® fibre last season in China and had great success with it, so we see a lot of potential in this market. We have seen so many buyers in this fair, including textile producers and wholesalers, but also brands such as H&M, Lacrosse and Fila, and Chinese brands like Youngor, Li-Ning, Bosideng and Nanshan Group.”

Mr Norihisa Fujiwara, Section Manager, Textile & Apparel Business Dept, Teijin Frontier Co Ltd, Japan

    Premium Wool Zone

“We are satisfied with the result this time. We always meet new contacts at this fair, and the number of buyers in the Premium Wool Zone this time has increased. It’s important we are in this zone because of the growing made-to-measure business in China. The zone is very established in this market, and many people know this is where to find high-quality wool. In Intertextile, although our main focus is on China, we’ve also seen customers from Singapore, India and the US.”

Mr William Halstead, Sales Director, Taylor & Lodge, UK

    Functional Lab

“We exhibit here to promote our brand to Chinese consumers and brands, and Intertextile Shanghai gives us a lot of exposure in the market. In addition to many Chinese buyers, we’ve also met a lot of international visitors from the US, Europe, India and Bangladesh. The visitor flow has been excellent so far, and we’ve already distributed around 4,500 brochures to interested buyers.”

Mr Yong Hwan Shin, Marketing Manager, Taekwang Industry Co Ltd, Korea

“Our target here is the Chinese market, in particular high-end brands, and the buyer quality at Intertextile is very good. Septwolves and other well-known domestic brands have visited our booth, while we have also met some high-quality customers with stores on Alibaba, Tmall and Yanxuan. Online shopping is a big trend in China, and the number of e-commerce apparel brands is growing very fast. In addition to these new contacts, we can also meet many of our existing customers here.”

Mr Anchuan Tang, Design Promotion Manager, Esquel Ent. Ltd, Hong Kong

    All About Sustainability

“This edition we moved to the All About Sustainability area, and because of this we have met more high-quality customers who are interested in our sustainable products. Environmental protection is a big trend in China now, and Intertextile is a good platform for us to meet domestic buyers, while we can also meet some of our overseas customers here. This is a first-class business platform, where we can not only meet our existing customers, but also discover new ones.”

Mr Leon Xu, Sales Manager, Hemp Fortex Industries (Rushan) Ltd, China

    Verve for Design

“Yesterday (day one) was super busy, and today is fairly busy as well. Many people have checked out our prints and returned with their boss to purchase them. I can say we have had a good show. I think the Chinese market values the US trends and designs. They are willing to pay a higher price for prints from the studios that are here.”

Mr Kyle Naughtrip, VP, Operation and Sales, Nikki Martinkovic, USA

    Accessories Vision

“As one of the largest textile exhibitions in the world, we can not only meet many of our existing customers here, but also find new potential customers. The number of people in our booth at any one time is always high. Moreover, the quality of customers here is generally good, which, when it comes to doing business, is a unique feature of Intertextile when compared to similar exhibitions.”

Mr Sean Pan, Sales Manager, 3M Intl. Trading (SHA) Co Ltd, China

    Buyer impressions

“This exhibition represents the whole textile industry, we can find everything we need! Nowhere else in the world can you find this, only here in China. One place, three days, you can find everything you need, including fabrics, trims and all the accessories, and you can find new suppliers to work with.”

Mr Markus Göldi, General Manager, Global Trend GmbH, Switzerland

“I found this fair amazingly well laid out, and it has everything we are looking for. We are able to do 90% of the sourcing we need to here. Intertextile also gives us insights into what are the new things coming out. It is a great experience to be here.”

Mr Kuldeep Raswant, Golden Unicorn (HK) Ltd, Hong Kong

“We are looking for high-quality raw material suppliers, and the quality of the exhibitors this edition is very good. Our customers are brands such as Nike, adidas, New Balance, Columbia Sportswear, Decathlon, Li-Ning and Anta, so Intertextile Shanghai is an important platform for us to find quality products which can meet the needs of our clients.”
